Jordan Mustoe signs up
by The Boy Holty
Good news everyone, Bury have signed a new left back - albeit on a month's loan. This must surely mean the end for Gareth Roberts who has cost us goals since day one.
I keep meaning to go through all the match highlights for the season so far to see precisely how many goals that we've conceeded have been a direct result of Roberts being about as quick as a glacier, but it must be at least six or seven. Both Saturday's goals at Dagenham were down to him (although, to be fair, not solely his fault entirely).
He's not a bad player, he's just slow, and at age 35 he was never going to get any quicker. he's also supposed to be the captain but didn't turn out to be much of a leader on the field. You can't really blame Blackwell for giving him a try - he came to us with Championship experience and KB obviously saw him as the one to help the younger ones through, but it hasn't worked. What you CAN blame Blackwell for is that he stuck with him for 12 games when he was costing us goals.
So to the new boy. He's coming to us from Wigan Athletic, and he's 22. He joined Wigan from the Liverpool youth system and has spent quite a few loan periods away from the DW Stadium at such exotic locations as Barnet, Morecambe and Carlisle, so he's obviously not the next Roberto Carlos but hopefully he'll help seal things up at the back in what is a very young back four.
I would hope and expect that if he does well, we'll extend the loan.
