Bury 0 Crawley Town 2: Oh What A Shocker!
by The Boy Holty
Bury went into a run of five highly winnable games on the back of a fantastic victory at Swindon the previous Tuesday but in the end turned in a relegation performance if ever I have seen one. It was one of the worst performances you are ever likely to see.
Kevin Blackwell's post-match interview lasted all of two minutes and all he could do was apologise and to appear as mystified as everyone else was angry, frustrated and demoralised by what we had just seen.
There's really not much to add to that except that Crawley's opener came mid-way through the first half following a run into the box by Jamie Proctor and a shot which might have taken a small deflection. Bury came out in the second half, no doubt with the Gaffer's words still ringing in their ears and promptly went 2-0 behind when a Nicky Adams cross was headed home unchallenged by Proctor again.
After that the heads went down and we were lucky to only lose by the two goals.
Former Shaker Michael Jones, one of my favourite Bury players of recent years, got a warm applause from the Bury fans when he was substituted and even Nicky Adams was clapped by a few home supporters, which reflects just what a good performance both lads put in on their returns to Gigg.
Richie Barker must have been as pleased as punch, but he showed a commendable restraint despite a bit of abuse coming his way.
All in all, it was a terrible performance and a bad result and if we are going to have any hope of getting out of this mess, we need to act now. We have Portsmouth away next Saturday, followed by thee home games against Scunthorpe, Colchester and Stevenage.
In other news, my mate John knows quite a few people in the club and was told that if we go down, we'll go into administration, so we'd be starting life in league 2 with minus ten points. Things could get pretty bleak at Gigg Lane in the next year or two but hey ho, chin up lads, let's not get too down about it.
