FA Cup 2012/13: Time for a cup run?
by The Boy Holty
After Saturday's hard fought and highly entertaining draw with league two side Southend United, both sides will fancy their chances of being the ones to face either Brentford or Bradford City at home in the third round and all four sides will quite rightly fancy their chances of being in that famous old bag of balls for the fourth round draw in early January.
Southend had come to Bury with no fear and had given us a good game. A deserved penalty had given us an undeserved lead but after that it was a good old fashioned FA Cup tie with both teams going for the win. Southend may feel that their name might not be on the cup though after hitting both posts in stoppage time but the replay will be anybody's for the taking.
Brentford earned their replay on Friday night after drawing 1-1 at Valley Parade and both clubs will probably be a bit underwhelmed at the prospect of a third round tie at either Gigg Lane or Roots Hall but that's life. Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal had been taken so that's what they've been left with.
As for our own chances, I rather fancy us to win the replay a week on Tuesday and wouldn't bet against us at home to anyone at the moment. I can only remember us getting beyond the the third round once in recent years and that was when we beat Norwich and lost at Southampton a few years back. It would be nice to have a decent cup run, of course it might not be the only one as we play Preston in the JPT on Tuesday and a win against PNE could put Wembley within our sights . .
