That's Better. That's Bury!
by The Boy Holty
Well after four consecutive league defeats, Bury earned a hard-fought point in a fairly entertaining nil nil draw against high-flying McDons.
There wasn't much in the way of goalmouth incident to talk about. Carson pulled off a couple of very good saves and Sodje did well to avoid giving away a penalty for a second half handball. At the other end, we didn't trouble their goal too much. Worrall and Jones had attempts and the excellent Shane Byrne sent a piledriver right down the keeper's throat. Andy Bishop had a 90th minute 1 on 1 opportunity to score but the best thing about the game was the attitude and application of the entire team - a vast improvement on recent performances.
From the start they were well up for it and more than matched Milton Keynes although the visitors, with their 80 or 90 supporters, always looked capable of stepping it up a gear.
Barker had opted for a 4-5-1 formation with Harrad on his own up front and despite our reservations, it seemed to work pretty well. Even Giles Coke, who had looked fairly hopeless in recent games, did ok and the defensive partnership of Sodje and Eastham looked impressive.
It was our annual Starkies experience today, and six of us had a bloody good nosh-up before taking our seats in the directors enclosure. Unfortunately we had to share it with pond-life like Peter Winkleman but Steven Schumacher was in there and so was my dentist so it wasn't so bad.
We've dropped a couple of places but this new look team is hopefully starting to gel now, not to mention getting some of the recent signings a bit more match fit. Our next four games are against Yeovil, Exeter, Leyton Orient and Bournemouth so we must be in a decent position now to take some points from these games.
Up the Shakers.
